Two Decades of Connection: A Friendship and a Kidney Donation

Content

A Friend’s Unwavering Support

Paul, who has known Gordon for over 20 years, had witnessed his friend’s declining health and reduced quality of life. He was away from his children, territory, and involvement in local culture and community events, particularly with youth. He wanted to help, and looked into live kidney donation. As a universal donor, he was compatible with anyone. Following several consultations with medical professionals confirming he was eligible; he approached his friend with the offer.

At first, Gordon found it difficult to accept such a generous gift: “I asked him what his wife and children thought about it, and he told me not to worry, that they were fine with it. So, I went to meet his wife in Ottawa. She just took me in her arms and told me to take it,” he recounts.

Both of them underwent extensive testing to ensure the transfer would be successful, and would result in both leading normal lives, following the procedure.

Finally, on June 4th of this year, Paul donated one of his kidneys to his long-time friend.

The Impact of Live Kidney Donation

Undergoing dialysis multiple times a week can be very draining and difficult for individuals and families affected by a diagnosis of kidney failure. Oftentimes, a transplant is the best choice to restore full quality of life, but wait lists are long. Not everyone is aware that it is possible for a person to donate one of their kidneys and live a full and healthy life, and that a transplant from a living donor typically performs more effectively and has a longer lifespan.

Looking Ahead

Gordon’s story is a testament to the healing power of friendship and strong community bonds. As he recovers, he hopes to be back on the territory and involved in his work with youth, a passion he shares with Paul.
