On Saturday, August 31, 2024, The Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay (CBHSSJB), with support from the Cree School Board and the Cree Nation of Chisasibi, organized a heartfelt ceremony to cherish the James Bay Eeyou School, a place of learning, community activities, memories, and joyful moments. This event also marked a significant transition as the school is set to be demolished to pave the way for the future regional hospital.
Mr. Bertie Wapachee, the Chairperson of the CBHSSJB, Mrs. Daisy House, the chief of the Cree Nation of Chisasibi, and Mrs. Sarah Pash, the Chairperson of the Cree School Board, delivered inspiring speeches emphasizing unity and collaboration. Their speeches also reflected on their own studies at the James Bay Eeyou School, sharing personal anecdotes and memories that highlighted the school’s impact on their lives and careers. This personal touch added a nostalgic and emotional layer to the event, celebrating the school’s legacy and its role in shaping community leaders.
Mr. Wapachee also shared his vision for the future of Eeyou Istchee and the transformative impact of the upcoming new regional hospital:
“We are closing a chapter, but writing a new one in our region’s journey towards self-determination. Our new regional hospital presents both a challenge and an opportunity for every Cree to pursue a career here. This is your home, and the careers at the CBHSSJB are yours to take. We will continue partnering with the Cree School Board to create new pathways to these careers.”
The event featured performances by Chisasibi drum groups, lively fiddle dancers, and a live band, all celebrating the rich culture of Eeyou Istchee. The day concluded with a strong sense of optimism and unity, as everyone looks forward to the new opportunities and advancements that the future regional hospital will bring.
