Tribute to Elder Florrie Mark Stewart, a pillar of the Cree Nation

The CBHSSJB Board of Directors is saddened to learn of the passing of Elder Florrie (Moses) Mark Stewart on February 3, 2024 at her home in Eastmain at the age of 89.

The CBHSSJB Board of Directors wishes to acknowledge Elder Florrie’s many valuable and outstanding contributions to the Cree way of life. She was a teacher and a mentor to many people. As a Cree language teacher at the Wabannuatao Eeyou School she promoted and enriched the Cree language for so many young people across generations.

Florrie will be remembered as a great and powerful storyteller. Her stories and legends will continue to echo across Eeyou Istchee.

Chairperson Bertie Wapachee remembers Elder Florrie with gratitude and honour: “We have great respect for her as a knowledge keeper to our language and culture, for her kindness, gentle spirit, and wisdom.”

The CBHSSJB extends its sincere condolences to Elder Florrie’s immediate family, the people of Eastmain and to Florrie’s many friends. Furthermore, the CBHSSJB Board of Directors extends sincere sympathies to her grandsons Daniel Mark Stewart, former member on the CBHSSJB Board of Directors, and current member Jamie Moses, for whom she played an influential role in their lives.
