Maamuu Upichinaausiun: Investing in Early Learning Skills for Cree Children
This past August, a group of young children aged 2 to 4 and their parents attended a series of workshops at the Chisasibi CMC. Their aim was to help parents come together and practice early learning skills with their kids. This was also an opportunity for families to get to know various professionals at the CMC including the special needs community worker, the occupational therapists and a physiotherapist. This service was made possible through funding from the Indigenous Early Learning and Child Care program, which supports this kind of initiative for young Indigenous children.
The workshops cover a range of topics, from screen time and emotional regulation to strengthening fine motor skills. Elders connected with the participants through music and storytelling. Following positive feedback from the participating families, the Maamuu Upichinaausiun sessions will be happening in the near future, with a different cohort of participants.
The CBHSSJB and Chisasibi team members are pleased to collaborate with Head Start and the Cree Nation Government to make this service available to children in the community.
