Jordan's Principle Implementation Updates
ISC has implemented updated procedures for approving products, services, and supports under Jordan’s Principle. This initiative reinforces the commitment to ensuring First Nations children receive the necessary supports without facing barriers due to their identity. The updated process acknowledges the shared responsibility between federal and provincial governments and is designed to complement, not duplicate, existing programs.
What's Changed?
Key updates to the Jordan's Principle request process now require:
- Supporting documentation from a qualified professional within the child's circle of care.
- This documentation must clearly link the requested support to the child's specific needs.
- The documentation must be within the professional's scope of practice.
ISC has also clarified funding guidelines, specifying certain items that will generally not be approved unless required by substantive equality and is linked to a specific health need. These include:
- Purchase, construction, or structural renovations of homes and yard.
- Requests for sporting events or elite/competitive sport training (unless linked to specific health, social, or educational needs).
- International travel (unless for exceptional medical needs).
- Non-medical supports like groceries, childcare, clothing, furniture, and vehicles.
- School-related requests (unless linked to specific health, social, or educational needs). Supports for off-reserve and private schools will be directed to provincial resources.
- Automatic administrative fees in group requests.
Applications continue to be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
