Dr. Yv Bonnier-Viger named Director of Regional Public Health

The Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay is pleased to welcome Dr. Yv Bonnier-Viger to the position of Director of Public Health, on a part-time basis from June 21 to September 30, 2022

Dr. Bonnier-Viger is a respected public health expert with a long history with the CBHSSJB. He served as Director of Public Health from 2002 to 2007, AED Pimuhteheu (2007-2008), Executive Director of the CBHSSJB in 2015, and interim Executive Director on two occasions, in 2004 and 2006-2007. 

Since 2016, he has been Director of Regional Public Health for Gaspésie and Îles-de-la-Madeleine, leading the region’s public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He will continue in this position on a part-time basis.  

Dr. Bonnier-Viger is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada and a member of the Association des spécialistes en médecine préventive du Québec (ASMPQ). He holds an International Master’s Degree in Health Leadership from McGill University, a master’s in epidemiology and a doctorate in medicine with specialization in public health and preventive medicine (community health) from Laval University, bachelor’s degrees in both mathematics and health sciences, and a diploma in industrial mechanics.  

Dr. Bonnier-Viger has an extensive background in global health issues, with an emphasis on Indigenous health and ecosystem approaches to health in northern regions. He served as scientific advisor to the Centre de coopération internationale en santé et développement (Centre for International Cooperation in Health and Development) from 1997 to 2006 and has worked in Peru and many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.  

From 2010 to 2015 Dr. Bonnier-Viger was the Director of the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at Laval University, and he remains a faculty member with the university. He is a member of the Board of the Nasivvik (renamed Littoral) Research Chair in Ecosystem Approaches to Northern Health and was a principal investigator with the Nituuchishaayihitaau Aschii (Environmental Health) project during his time with the CBHSSJB. 

Dr. Bonnier-Viger will replace Dr. Marie-Jo Ouimet, who is leaving the organization in July 2021 to join the climate change team at INSPQ. While this is an interim position, planning is in place to recruit a permanent, full-time Director of Public Health.
