Dr. Alain Poirier named Director of Public Health for Eeyou Istchee

The CBHSSJB is proud to announce the nomination of Dr. Alain Poirier to the position of Director of Public Health. Public Health is a regional department that works to promote Miyupimaatisiiun for the whole population of Eeyou Istchee.

Dr. Alain Poirier, FRCPC, CSPQ, M. Sc. MD, B. Sc. is one of Canada’s top public health experts. He spent the last three years as Director of Public Health at CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS, including two years managing the pandemic in the Eastern Townships. From 2003 to 2012, he held the position of National Director and Assistant Deputy Minister of Public Health at the MSSS. He chaired Québec en Forme (QEF). From 1998 to 2003, he held senior positions in INSPQ and served as Vice-President of INSPQ from 2012 to 2017. Dr. Poirier has been an important actor in the fight against smoking, and is a well-known columnist and media commentator. He has taught at the University of Sherbrooke and University of Montreal, and has carried out international health missions in forty countries. 

In 2022, Dr. Poirier received the Mérite Estrien from La Tribune/Société Radio-Canada for his management of COVID, and in 2011, the Ambassador Award from the University of Sherbrooke, and in 1998, the Jean Rochon Award from the Association des médecins spécialistes en santé communautaire du Québec for his remarkable contribution to community health in Québec.  

Dr. Poirier will be officially confirmed in his position at an upcoming Special meeting of the Board of Directors. Dr. Poirier is passionate about discovering new horizons. Working with Indigenous communities has been a goal for many years. He will be based in Mistissini.  

Dr. Poirier takes over the position of Director of Public Health for Eeyou Istchee from Dr. Yv Bonnier-Viger, who served as Interim Director on a part-time basis since June 2021.
