Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay Responds to Incident in Whapmagoostui

The Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay (CBHSSJB) is profoundly concerned by the recent incident involving one of our agency nurses, who was assaulted in her accommodation on October 12. This serious event has significant implications for our organization and the community we serve, and we take it very seriously.

We want to reassure our community that the safety and well-being of our staff and community members are our highest priorities. We are fully cooperating with local authorities in their ongoing investigation, approaching this situation with the utmost attention and sensitivity.

In light of this incident, we are committed to thoroughly evaluating our existing safety measures and addressing the matter with local authorities. Our internal teams are collaborating to provide immediate support for affected employees while enhancing safety protocols across our facilities, including the implementation of night watchmen.

We recognize the emotional impact this incident may have on our community. To this end, we encourage individuals to access our support services, available through the Wîchihîwâuwin (Mental Health) Helpline at 1-833-632-4357. Trained professionals are available to offer guidance and support 24/7, with Cree speakers and Elders available upon request.

In these trying times, we encourage everyone to practice discretion and respect the privacy of those involved and the integrity of the investigation.

Together, we will work diligently to create a safe and supportive environment for all. We appreciate your understanding and compassion as we address this critical matter.
