Community Feast in Waskaganish for Long-term Employees and the 40th Anniversary of the Cree Health Board

On Tuesday, September 18, the Cree Health Board Waskaganish Community Miyupimaatisiiun Centre hosted a community feast featuring smoked fish, singers and fiddle dancing. The feast was a retirement party for three recently retired employees, Marjorie Blackned, Sarah J. Katapatuk and Hilda Stephen. Hilda first came to work at the clinic as a Beneficiary Attendant in 1977! It was also a celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Cree Health Board (founded in April 1978), and a chance to recognize the contributions of more than 35 Waskaganish employees with 10, 20, 30 and 40 years of service.

Each honouree received a framed print by Whapmagoostui artist Natasia Mukash. The Board of Directors of the CBHSSJB were present, and Board Chairperson Bella M. Petawabano and Executive Director Daniel St-Amour extended their congratulations to the Waskaganish team led by Local Director Bert Blackned (31 years service), and the hard-working organizing committee headed by Bessie Gillies (10 years service). The fish came from Smokey Hill Nûtimesânân ᓅᑎᒣᓵᓈᓐ and the main meal was provided by Mistissini-based Nikki’s Gourmet Catering. A memorable evening!
