From Agreement to Action: The Impact of the JBNQA on Health Services

Fifty years ago, the signing of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement marked a defining moment in the Cree Nation’s journey toward self-determination. As Canada’s first modern treaty, it was born from a collective effort to protect and affirm Cree language, values, livelihood, and responsibilities to one another.

Through this historic agreement, the Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay (CBHSSJB) was entrusted with a profound mandate: to deliver health and social services rooted in Eeyou/Eenou realities. As the organization commemorates this milestone today, it also honours those who laid the foundation by dedicating entire careers to its mission and those who continue to lead this mandate into the future. Together, CBHSSJB’s leadership, managers and staff reflect and advance on the ongoing journey to provide health and social services that truly honour Eeyou/Eenou identity and traditions.

Maintaining autonomy in how care is delivered means fostering understanding, collaboration, and open dialogue. Every step forward reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that each person in Eeyou Istchee receives care that upholds dignity, fosters healing, and strengthens well-being, rooted in care, culture, connection, and community, while creating new opportunities to advance miyupimâtisîun.
