Walking Out Ceremonies are a cherished family and community tradition in Cree culture. We would like to share some protocol recommendations for your Walking Out Ceremonies this season, to protect your families in light of COVID-19. (Scroll down for recommendations in Cree).

• Host a smaller ceremony, with close family only.
• Remain 6 feet apart from people that you don’t live with.
• Elders should be protected from having contact with other people.
• Limit the number of people inside the teepee to people of the same household.
• Families should take turns if more than one child is involved.
• Only immediate family should be in the teepee to see the child walk out, and to receive the child back in the teepee or tent.
• People outside the teepee should not stand close to people they don’t live with. Maintain 6 feet of distance between people who do not live together.
• Have hand sanitizer available for everyone attending the ceremony, to keep their hands clean.
• Wear a cloth mask protects other people in case you have COVID disease without knowing it. People are encouraged to wear a mask if they need to stand close to other people they don’t live with.
• No one who is in self-isolation or feeling sick should attend any type of family gathering. Doing so may put their vulnerable family members at risk.
