CLE/CE High School Tour 2026: Bringing Genetics Education to Youth Across Eeyou Istchee

This fall, the CLE/CE Educational and Carrier Screening Program is hitting the road once again, visiting high schools across Eeyou Istchee to connect with students through interactive learning, open conversations, and culturally respectful education.  

Understanding your health starts with understanding your story. That's why this tour is designed to make learning about CLE (Cree Leukoencephalopathy) CE (Cree Encephalitis), genetics, and carrier screening engaging, accessible, and relevant for Cree youth.

What Students Can Expect 

The High School Tour offers more than a classroom presentation. Students will take part in hands-on activities, interactive discussions, and visual demonstrations that make genetics easier to understand. 

Throughout the visit, students will: 

• Learn what CLE/CE are and how these conditions are inherited. 
• Understand what it means to be a carrier and why carrier screening matters. 
• Explore genetics through engaging activities, including the berry analogy. 
• Ask questions in a welcoming, respectful, and judgement-free environment. 
• Receive educational resources to continue conversations with their families and loved ones. 

The school tour is designed to provide accurate, culturally relevant information that empowers youth to make informed decisions about their health, now and in the future.  

Eligible students will also receive information about voluntary carrier screening, including what the test involves, who can participate, and where to find additional support.

The CLE/CE Educational and Carrier Screening Program is a collaboration between CHU Sainte-Justine and the Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay. Together, we are committed to providing evidence-based, culturally respectful education that supports Cree youth, families, and communities in understanding CE, CLE, genetics, and carrier screening.
