Long before there was a day to recognize us, Cree culture was already thriving – shaped through countless layers of land, family, language, tradition, knowledge, and community. Each layer connected, carrying our identity forward across generations.
This Indigenous Peoples Day, we celebrate the depth, strength, and interconnectedness of Cree culture across Eeyou Istchee. Cree culture is not singular. It is shaped through many layers that exist together: the land that teaches us, the language that connects us, the stories that guide us, the traditions that ground us, and the people who carry knowledge forward.
These layers are woven through everyday life. They are found in families, communities, ceremonies, language, seasonal practices, cultural teachings, and the relationships that continue to connect Cree people to the land and to one another.
We honour the richness, resilience, and continuity of Cree culture, past, present, and future.
Every Layer Carries a Story
No single layer can tell the whole story of Cree culture. Language conveys knowledge.
Stories carry teachings. Traditions embody values. Communities preserve memories. The land carries connections that have existed for generations.

Like the layers themselves, Cree identity is not defined by a single story. It is forged through the many experiences, teachings and connections that continue to bring meaning to community life across Eeyou Istchee.
