Sun Safety and Sunscreen: Stay Protected All Summer
Enjoying a sunny day outside, playing, working, and fishing can be one of the most relaxing and recharging ways to enjoy summer. Be cautious, as sometimes too much sun can be harmful!
Here are some ways to enjoy the sun while keeping safe!
Limit your time in the sun! If you have to be outdoors when the sun is at its strongest (UV index of +3), take steps to protect your skin, such as staying in areas that provide shade or bringing an umbrella along!
Protect the little ones! Sunscreen isn't recommended for babies under 6 months old. But don't worry, you can still keep them cool and safe in the sun. Here's how:
- Seek shade, especially during midday (peak UV rays). An umbrella or stroller shade is a great option.
- Dress them in lightweight, long-sleeved clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
Cover up! Protect your skin with light-coloured long-sleeve shirts, pants, and hats made of breathable fabric. Use sunglasses that protect against UVA and UVB
Sunscreen is key! Kids and adults can wear Sunscreen. Sunscreen comes in different forms (lotions, sprays, powder, etc.) with varying levels of SPF (sun protective factors). Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 that offers broad-spectrum coverage to protect against UVA and UVB rays, and is water-resistant for activities like swimming.
Using the UV forecast: Check the UV index for your location online or through a weather app. If the UV index is 3 or higher, wear sunscreen, protective clothing, and sunglasses, even if it's cloudy. Reflections of water, sand, and concrete can increase UV exposure.
Stay hydrated! Drink plenty of cool liquids throughout the day, especially on hot and humid days. Water is always the best choice! This helps prevent heat-related illness.
How to Apply Sunscreen for Optimal Protection
Before you head outside, here are some key tips to ensure your Sunscreen is working its hardest to protect you:
Sunscreen should be applied 15 minutes before going outside, and at least every 2 hours while you are outside!
Apply generously to any areas not covered by clothing! Don’t forget your ears, the backs of your hands, and your scalp (if you have short hair or are bald).
- 1 tsp for each arm
- 1 tsp for each leg
- 1 tsp for your front
- 1 tsp for your back
- 1 tsp for your face and neck
Test sunscreen to see if it is your first use or the brand. Do this, especially if you or your loved one has sensitive skin. It is always best to speak with a healthcare provider about recommendations for sunscreen products and sensitive skin.
Avoid storing in direct sunlight or places that can reach high temperatures (like a hot car). Exposure to extreme heat may cause sunscreens to be less effective.
Check your expiry dates! Expired sunscreens could be less effective.
