Advisory: Medical masks strongly recommended for visitors and caregivers

Medical masks are strongly recommended for visitors and caregivers at Cree Health Board service facilities as a precaution against respiratory viruses including COVID-19.

Respiratory virus infections including COVID-19 are on the rise this season in Eeyou Istchee. Anyone can catch a virus such as COVID-19, the flu, or common cold and spread it to other people.

Wearing a medical mask provides a strong layer of protection against spreading respiratory infections.

Masking strongly recommended for visitors at Cree Health Board care facilities

The Cree Health Board strongly recommends visitors and caregivers visiting patients wear a medical mask in the following situations:

  • When they feel sick or experience symptoms of a respiratory infection

  • When visiting hospitalized patients at the Chisasibi Regional Hospital

People experiencing symptoms or who feel sick should consider postponing their visit to a patient at a Cree Health Board facility if that’s possible. Essential visits are still allowed.

Mandatory masking to visit Chisasibi Elders’ Home

Wearing a medical mask is mandatory for all visitors and caregivers at the Elders’ Home in Chisasibi as per the facility’s policies.

Masking recommendations for Cree Health Board patients

Wearing a medical mask is strongly recommended for:

  • All patients experiencing symptoms of a respiratory infection.

  • Patients at risk of health complications from a respiratory infection (immunocompromised, post-transplant patients, people receiving cancer treatment or hemodialysis).

  • Hemodialysis patients are strongly encouraged to wear a medical mask during their stay at health facilities in Eeyou Istchee (CBHSSJB hemodialysis units in Chisasibi and Mistissini) AND at facilities outside of the Cree Health Board, especially if:

  1. Physical distancing (of two metres or more) can’t be maintained with other patients.

  2. There are no physical barriers in place (such as dividing curtains and Plexiglass panels).
