April 6 update
April 6 update from Vice-Chair Christine Petawabano on JBCCS
We hope to see as many people as possible vaccinated before going on Goose Break. We are in the 3rd wave of the pandemic. COVID-19 cases continue to go up in Ontario and Quebec. This is related to variants of the virus that spread more easily.

In our neighbouring regions of Lac St-Jean and Abitibi there are new cases reported every day. This continues to be a concern for people travelling to and from Eeyou Istchee.
The Cree Nation is fortunate as we have not reported any cases of the variant up until now in Eeyou Istchee. It is because of our vigilance that our communities enjoy the freedom to gather and visit family.
In other regions of Quebec, people are still living under strict restrictions. The Health Board and Cree leadership encourage everyone to keep up with precautionary measures to protect our communities.
This week the second dose of the Moderna vaccine is available in each community. Drop-In Clinics are open for people to get their second dose. People who haven't yet received the first dose can still get it. We encourage you to do so.
The Cree Health Board would also like to remind people that if they are vaccinated, they still are subject to the Mandatory Self-Isolation Law if they travel to an Area of Risk. We all look forward to the time when this precaution is no longer needed. But it is still necessary for the time being.
We believe Eeyou Istchee is the safest region for this year's Goose Break, as we see what is happening elsewhere in Quebec and Ontario.
Out-of-Region vaccination
Cree beneficiaries outside of Eeyou Ischee who want to get vaccinated can still make arrangements. For details on how to request Out-of-Region Vaccination, visit the Cree Health Board website or Facebook page.
Travel
Intercommunity travel is allowed to visit family, or for essential reasons. People are required to share information when they pass through community gates. This information is useful in case we do face an outbreak, and have to do contact tracing. We appreciate people's cooperation.
People can visit the Cree Health Board's Facebook page or website for for tips on gathering and visiting safely.
Travel Outside Eeyou Istchee
Cree Leadership, with the advice of Public Health, will review travel restrictions to Saguenay and Abitibi after Goose Break. This is because of the current risks presented by the variants of COVID-19.
Right now, people can travel to the following regions without having to isolate when they come home:
- Region 10 (ChibougamauChapais, Lebel sur Quevillon, Radisson)
- Region 17 (Nunavik)
All other regions in Quebec, and Ontario are still considered Areas of Risk. People who travel from these regions will have to self-isolate for 14 days when they return to Eeyou Istchee.
There are curfews in place in orange zones and in Montreal, which remains a Red Zone. If people travel outside Eeyou Istchee they should check rules at their destination.
For information about Areas of Risk and travel advisories, please visit the Cree Nation Government's website.
