THROUGHOUT THE PANDEMIC, THERE HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT VARIANTS OF COVID-19

  • Viruses constantly change, especially as they spread
  • The Delta variant was first identified in India
  • Delta has been labelled as a “variant of concern” because of its important differences compared to other variants of COVID-19

DELTA IS MORE CONTAGIOUS AND CAN CAUSE MORE SEVERE DISEASE

The Delta variant is more than twice as contagious as others, and therefore can spread more easily.

  • A person with the Delta variant will infect more people than if they had other variants
  • The Delta variant may lead to more hospitalizations and complications

VACCINATION IS STILL AN IMPORTANT LAYER OF PROTECTION

  • Vaccination is still an important layer of protection against severe disease, hospitalization, and death
  • Getting a 2nd dose provides better protection against COVID-19 and variants of concern, including the Delta variant
  • In a small number of people, Delta may “break-through” the strong layer of protection provided by the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines
  • Ongoing studies are researching how the Delta variant behaves in vaccinated people, but there is some evidence that vaccination is less effective against transmission for this variant

Delta spreads more easily

Why is it different?

It infects more people and spreads faster than other variants of the virus that causes COVID-19.

STAY UPDATED AS THINGS MAY CHANGE

  • Continue following public health recommendations and precautionary measures like wearing masks, sanitizing your hands, and physical distancing
  • Precautionary measures, such as wearing masks and self-isolation after certain activities, may need to increase or stick around for quite some time
  • This is because the Delta variant is more contagious than other variants
