Why do you need a Health Card ?

  • Every community member is entitled to possess a valid provincial health card, ensuring access to essential healthcare services
  • Every community member of Eeyou Istchee is encouraged to maintain a valid Health Card, although it's not mandatory for receiving healthcare and social services within the territory, except for specialist appointments and care in the South (Region 6, 8, and 10).
  • A valid health card also serves as an official document, offering identification validity, especially useful for travel purposes.

Emergency Surgery

If you currently do not possess a health card or it has expired, and you require surgery, you may be asked to cover the costs initially, with reimbursement available within one year upon obtaining a new card.

Non-emergency Surgery

If you don’t have a card, or have an expired card, the surgery will be cancelled until you get a card.

Travelling down south

For individuals planning travel to the South for treatment, ensuring the validity of your health card is recommended.
Please make sure you and all your dependents (children and elders) get a card before the next medical appointment down south. Always carry a card with you when you travel down south.
It's your responsibility to possess a valid Health Card when seeking specialist care or receiving treatment in the South,
