FUTURE BIRTHING HOME IN WASKAGANISH: CALL FOR ART PROPOSALS

This call for original art proposals is open to all Cree artists residing in one or other of the Cree communities to submit proposals for original works for the construction project of the Birthing home in Eeyou Istchee, in Waskaganish. The new Birthing home will also serve the communities of Eastmain and Nemaska.

For this project, the Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay (CBHSSJB) wishes the realisation of three artworks:

1. an interior sculpture (suspended) to be integrated into the reception area;

2. a 2D or relief interior artwork to be integrated into one of the walls of the reception area (facing the curtain wall);

3. an interior sculpture (suspended) to be integrated into the multifunctional room (optional).

With a unifying concept, the keywords proposed for this project related to the vocation of the site are: birth, newborn, family, pride, traditional and cultural values of the Cree, strong sense of belonging to the Cree community, richness of the territory (fauna and flora).

GUIDELINES

· The deadline to submit one or more than one art proposals is April 25, 2025

· From the proposals received, the selection committee will choose a maximum of three artists as finalists per location based on the quality of their proposal. Each finalist will receive a lump sum of $2,000.

· Among the finalists, 3 winning artists will be invited to realise the artwork according to the size adapted to each location.

· Once selected, the winning artists will be invited to a technical information meeting where they will be provided with details on the project. If necessary, each winning artist may call on technical assistance, a collaborator of his or her choice or other professional resource for the realisation and installation of his or her integration artwork.

· The installation of the artworks is scheduled in the winter of 2026.

This art contest is currently being launched based on the governmental public art policy (Politique d’intégration des arts à l’architecture et à l’environnement des bâtiments et sites gouvernementaux et publics), instaured since 1961 and aiming for the creation, realisation and integration of permanent artworks in public buildings and sites throughout the province of Quebec.
